I distinctly remember the first time someone approached me about doing professional head shots. My palms got sweaty, and I even may have shifted my weight nervously from one foot to the other.
“I would like to have a black background, and have them look really professional!”
My client’s excitement made me smile sheepishly, and I couldn’t bring myself to tell them that I didn’t even have a black background, nor did I know where to get studio lighting…
At all.
The meeting ended, and immediately I searched the internet for a light and backdrop set up. Nervousness faded as I read countless blogs and articles about achieving “the premium head shot”. I asked other photographers for help, and even considered calling my client & telling them I wasn’t able to do their head shots at all.
Nervousness, fear, uncertainty, insecurity- they were all my best friends.
See, until that point I had prided myself on being a “natural light photographer”. Simply stated: I was completely uncomfortable with shooting anything that wasn’t outside in the beautiful, natural lighting. Specifically, “glowly” light , that the good Lord provided around 3pm.
Looking back, I realize now – though I dreaded it- how important and grateful I am that this situation occurred. I learned something that I STILL have to remind myself of: Being uncomfortable with something does not mean you should avoid it.
Being a good photographer doesn’t mean that I will always have the “premium” situations. Sometimes, there will be a cloudy day, and sometimes I won’t be able to shoot in “glowly” light- and that is okay! Being a good photographer means working with what I am given and creating the ultimate experience for my clients, regardless of circumstances.
Now, with the experience of countless indoor head shot & drape photo sessions under my belt, I’m excited to advertise a few. I never have blogged about them sessions before, because the sessions are usually to brief to blog about! Regardless, I love my clients, and I love being able to showcase them! I have come to fall in love with the ability to control studio lighting- it is SO fun!
Happy Friday!
