One of my favorite romances is depicted in Genesis 29. The story tells of a man, Jacob, and his love for a beautiful woman, Rachel. Jacob worked for Rachel’s father, and one day the father came to Jacob and asked him how he could pay Jacob for the work he was doing. Jacob’s only wish for wages was to marry Rachel. The father agreed that after seven years of labor, Jacob could wed his daughter.
Seven years came all too soon for a man who loved as deeply as Jacob. But the night of the wedding, the father didn’t give Rachel to Jacob, instead he gave his oldest daughter, Leah. Angry, Jacob went to the father and demanded to have Rachel, the one he truly loved. The father agreed that after seven more years of labor, Jacob could finally have his precious Rachel. Jacob didn’t give up and when that day came, it was the happiest day of his life….
Just like Jacob waited fourteen years for Rachel, Jeanie & Russ Robbins waited fourteen years for their Rachel. Unable to have children, they prayed for God to work miracles and provide. Fourteen years later they adopted a little baby girl and named her Rachel, after the woman that Jacob waited for in the Bible. The Robbins finally had a beautiful baby.
Fifteen months later, God blessed them with a surprise, Jeanie was pregnant with a baby girl, Jessica. Shortly after that, they were pregnant again, with their first son, David.
Previously unable to have children, they now had three.
God has such a beautiful way of weaving circumstances together to create beautiful tapestries of life.
Ephesians 1:4 says….
“…even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love he predestined us for adoption as sons [and daughters] through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will…”
Even before God created the world, he chose Rachel to be adopted into the Robbins family. Even before he laid the world’s foundations, God knew that Jeanie and Russ would have children, but only after Rachel was theirs first.
Isn’t our God incredible?
Spending a week with Rachel and Jessica I fell in love with their relationship. They giggle together, talk about boys, pick on each other, annoy each other, but in the end, they love each other deeply.
There is nothing like a sister’s love.
