I stand on the edge of what is and what could be a lot.
I second guess myself and second guess what I know the Lord has called me to do. I know it’s a part of growth. But when I stand on the edge, I often cause more damage than choosing to jump ever could. See, when we choose to stay in uncertainty we cause a lot of chaos within ourselves.
I think, naturally, humans want to give order to things. We want a step by step process or a detailed report on gains and losses with every decision we make to determine if its really worth it making.
But God doesn’t work like that.
And it’s not because he’s a bad God, its because he’s a good God.
If we really believe he is Lord of all, then we also must believe that he knows what is best for all, because he created it. He knows us better than we know ourselves.
At the end of last year the Lord told me that 2015 would be an incredible year. If you’re a part of The Letter, (It’s a once a month party I throw every month in your email inbox and you should deffffffffffinitely join if you haven’t already!) then you know that the Lord told me all of those exciting things, and then whispered discipline.
I don’t know about you but discipline isn’t a word that sounds exciting, whimsical or even encouraging. No one ever goes to comfort someone and says “You know what you need? Discipline!”
Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think many people want those 10 letters tattooed on their skin.
So I wrestled.
I was discouraged at first.
Days turned into weeks.
My head was filled with: What does that even MEAN God?
And now, months later. I have an idea of what discipline in my life looks like and what God is asking of me. How? Because I didn’t stop asking him.. but also because I started adding discipline to my life in simple ways:
Maybe he’s asking me to be disciplined financially … so I started budgeting.
Maybe he’s asking me to be disciplined with what I eat …. so I cut back on a few things.
Maybe he’s asking me to be disciplined with what I say …. so I started biting my tongue more….
So, do yourself a favor. Jump. Don’t stand on the edge any longer. Don’t play with the idea of something – make it happen. God delights in our movement and in our willingness – not in our religious laced speech about what we COULD happen.
Stop wanting – start pursuing.
You know he’s called you to DO something, or change something. But you’re wrestling with what that looks like, or how you should go about it. Your excuses aren’t you weighing your options… no… they are your fear preventing you from moving and convincing yourself that you have a right to stay where you are.
Let me encourage you for a hot second: Get up, and jump off the edge of what is and what could be. Don’t stay unknowing and unmoving any longer.
You were created to do this.
He’s God. If you’re seeking him, he’ll redirect your sails if and when the time is right.
You will never follow God perfectly, but you can always know that who you’re following is perfect.
