I’ve mentioned before how The University of Mobile is a musically gifted school. But no other group combines enthusiasm, musical theatre and Christ, like The Sounds of Mobile.
The Sounds of Mobile (nicknamed “Sounds”) is a highly energetic, 16-voice song and dance group. They perform a wide genre of music including pop, broadway classics, jazz, ’50s, Top 40, and contemporary Christian. Not only do they perform an incredible variety of genres, but they combine choreographed moves with their vocals. This combination is what sets their personality, style and presentation apart from any other.
I remember seeing Sounds perform live for the very first time. It was the weekend when I surprised Ryan, and visited The University of Mobile with my mom (read more about that adventure, here!🙂 . I was instantly captivated by The Sounds of Mobile’s talent and enthusiasm. To the core of who they are, individually and corporately, The Sounds of Mobile is captivated by Christ. Sixteen different personalities, voices and backgrounds have come together for the sole purpose of making Christ’s name famous.
The group’s leader, Seth, puts it best in his own words….
“Our purpose is to spread the love of Jesus Christ wherever we go. We go into schools, and show that, through Christ, there is hope. There is joy. There is salvation. We love to show that anybody can do anything. A football playing “jock” can get up, dance, sing, and speak before his peers. A quiet, shy girl who sits in the back of the class can share a personal testimony in front of hundreds and thousands. With Christ, all things are possible. While our purpose for going into schools is to spread hope, joy, excitement, and especially, love, our TRUE purpose is to show our love for Christ by loving our neighbor and spreading the Gospel. We also LOVE to go to churches and lead in worship ANY chance that we get. While we love going to churches, the schools are our mission field. Schools are where the lost are.”
At the end of this semester, change will transpire for The Sounds of Mobile. Instead of being a close-knit, intimate ensemble, their numbers will maximize and they will transform into a show choir. Though there are many mixed feelings about this change, the group knows that God is doing what He knows is best, and they trust that.
In celebration of who The Sounds of Mobile are, I thought it would be fun for my readers to know a few fun facts about the people who make up this incredible group!
- The girls in the group EAT a TON. Like they THROW DOWN!
- Elyn and Lauren have been in the group the longest. They still love it and work hard EVERY rehearsal.
- Sounds was originally created so UM could have a group that would perform on a cruise ship. They did so for two years on a cruise-line that toured Greece, and then the contract expired. Then Sounds became more school-oriented.
- Everywhere they go (especially schools), people always think that Seth is either Nick Jonas or Harry Styles, Cary is Ashley Tisdale, Logan is in One Direction, Shadoe is George Lopez, and Lauren is Carrie Underwood. (If you don’t know them personally, can you find these “look a-likes” in the pictures? 🙂
This ensemble is all volunteers. They don’t get paid. They don’t get perks or scholarships, at all. But that is one of the main things that has set them apart for all of these years. Everyone puts their all into each performance, and expects nothing in return. In fact, normally what they get in return is the Joy of the Lord, discipleship opportunities, some good memories, and a stronger relationship with each-other and Christ… which is better than anything else <3
