Long before David and I got engaged, I found myself scrolling through Pinterest picking my my favorite images that reflected the look and feel I desired for our wedding day– and every single girl said “Amen!“. I think we’ve all been there, and secretly I have to wonder what we did before Pinterest existed! It is SO easy to pop on, create a board and start pinning. I have had countless pinterest boards filled with sooo many images! As a wedding photographer, Pinterest is the perfect tool for myself and for my clients. Not only does it help me visualize what my client’s like, but it also helps me visualize what I like as well.
My problem? I like SO many things! I’ve been to countless weddings and I’ve seen a variety of different ideas, colors and concepts play out on a wedding day. I leave almost every wedding thinking to myself “Golly, I want THAT at my wedding!” or “Wow, that was such a sweet moment,” or “I love how THIS turned out,”. I save those ideas and moments in my mind and always promise to return to them later.
When it came time for me to start meeting with vendors, David and I met with our first one and I smiled confidently when the questions about our day were asked. All of the ideas I had stored for months on end started spilling out across the table. I used words like ” creamy colors, muted hues, intentional, romantic, dreamy”, but had nothing visual to depict what I was trying to describe. We left the meeting with my cheeks slightly pink, I felt like I hadn’t communicated clearly, and in all honesty, I hadn’t. There was a problem– I was on idea overload! I needed to figure out a clear and concise way to explain the concept of our wedding day clearly to our vendors. Words just wouldn’t cut it, I needed something other than words to describe what David and I wanted.
Whether you’re like me, and you have a million and one ideas for your wedding day, or you don’t have many ideas at all, I truly think it’s important to figure out what matters most. How to do that? Talk to your partner!
Now, David isn’t like me in the fact that he’s been dreaming about the details of his wedding day for years on end. BUT, he is like me in the fact that he’s getting married and has thoughts and opinions on what matters most to him! Though David definitely trusts me with the majority of the wedding planning, I absolutely want to prefer him. I’ve said it before, and I’ll happily say it again : our wedding day is the first day of our marriage together. Therefore I want the details of our day to be a snapshot of our marriage as a whole. I want to prefer David, put him first, romance him, and honor him!
How else can you organize and decide what you like most? Pinterest! Here are three helpful and effective tips I’ve been using to figure out the overall “look” and “feel” that we want for our wedding day:
-
“Like” everything on Pinterest, Pin, what you LOVE :
Ever wonder why you can “like” things on Pinterest, and also “pin” things on Pinterest? Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve always wondered! Regardless, I’ve found it SO helpful to be able to “like” the things that catch my eye, and then “pin” the things I LOVE to their appropriate Pinterest boards. It helps me sift through things and figure out my taste and style!
-
Create Boards for Everything :
David and I want a dessert table and coffee/espresso at our wedding day. So, I created a board for that! I wanted lots of fresh, green florals, so I created a board for that! David wanted buy whatever suit he picks for our wedding day, so to help him get ideas for looks he liked, we created a board for that! Creating Pinterest boards for everything might be a little excessive, but I prefer it to scrolling through countless pins on ONE board trying to figure out where that one little idea was!
-
Create a Mood Board for Your Vendors:
What is a mood board? It is a collection of ideas, concepts and in this case, images, that evoke a similar style or “mood” for a project! Graphic designers use mood boards ALL of the time in order to create design concepts for their clients. A mood board helps clearly define the “feel” of something– so it’s the perfect tool for YOU as your plan your wedding! Creating a mood board is SUPER easy.
I use Pinterest and picmonkey.com to create the one pictured above! I simply took a little time to see the commonly used colors and images that I had “liked” and “pinned” over time, then, I screenshot my favorite images and arranged them in PicMonkey! See how these images work together and create an overall “feel”? A mood board is the perfect tool to share with your vendors. Instead of scrolling through Pinterest boards or countless images trying to show what you like, a mood board waters down what you like in a clear and concise way! It’s been so nice texting and emailing our vendors this little nine image board to show them the “mood” of our wedding day!
This week David and I are preparing for our FIRST Wedding shower! Ah!! Have a happy Monday!
